Understanding the FW (Fee Waiver) Scheme – What It Is Supposed to Be
The FW – Fee Waiver scheme is a government-initiated scholarship that provides tuition fee relaxation to financially weak but academically deserving students. Under the official norms:
- FW students should NOT be charged any tuition fee.
- Colleges are allowed to charge only basic university/hostel/exam fees if applicable.
- FW students usually receive relief every year, especially if their performance is decent.
- The purpose is to help economically weaker families complete education without financial pressure.
This is how the FW scheme is officially meant to work. But students at IEC College shared something very different.
The FW Reality at IEC – Student Experiences
Multiple FW students told us that they were charged around ₹40,000 in the first year even though they joined under the Fee Waiver category. According to these students, no clear explanation was given regarding why such a high amount was charged when FW normally means zero tuition fee.
When FW students approached the accounts office in the second year expecting some reduction, they were told that “there is no fixed rule, it depends on the college administration, and they will decide how much concession to give.”
Students felt confused and helpless because the FW scheme is government-regulated — but here it was treated like a flexible, negotiable amount. Many students asked: “If the college wants, can they even charge full fees from FW students?” This uncertainty created stress for financially weaker students who chose FW seats specifically to lower their education burden.
Faculty Quality and Teaching Experience – A Major Concern
One of the most important pillars of any engineering college is the quality of its faculty. However, several students at IEC College shared with our team that faculty shortages and lack of experienced teachers were among the biggest problems they faced, especially after the first year.
In the first year, most students noticed that the faculty members seemed supportive and relatively better compared to the later years. Many students believe that the college invests more effort in the first-year teaching staff because this is the year when students form their impression of the college. If first-year faculty appear weak, students may leave or lose interest early. But after the first year, the quality of teaching reportedly drops sharply.
According to student accounts, there were multiple subjects in which classes were either not conducted regularly or taken by faculty who themselves had limited knowledge or no industry experience. Some students mentioned that entire periods went vacant due to the absence of teachers. Even when new faculty members joined, students reported that many lacked the expertise required to teach core engineering subjects effectively.
The COE (Centre of Excellence) Lab – Paid Courses and the Reality
IEC College promotes its COE – Centre of Excellence as a special lab that offers skill-based courses every semester. On paper, this sounds great. Skill development is essential for engineers, and COE labs can play an important role. However, students reported a very different ground reality.
Each semester, the college charges around ₹5000 per student for these COE courses. But the quality and structure of the courses, according to the students we spoke to, were disappointing. Many shared that:
- Classes were held only twice a week.
- No proper syllabus was followed.
- Most of the topics were extremely basic.
- Faculty teaching these sessions were neither specialists nor industry-trained.
- No real practical exposure or projects were provided.
One student told us that the “Web Development Course” under the COE lab covered only HTML and CSS, even though students had paid for a full-fledged development program. No advanced topics like JavaScript, React, Node.js, database integration, or backend development were included. Students naturally questioned why the college charged such amounts if the training did not match industry standards or even the curriculum promised during admission.
If a college wants to charge students for skill courses, it should at least provide quality content, industry-trained mentors, and proper hands-on sessions. But the feedback we received did not match these expectations.
Infrastructure and Facilities – The Difference Between Claims and Reality
The infrastructure shown in the college photos on websites and social media pages is impressive. Students are shown modern labs, AC classrooms, and a clean campus environment. But the actual everyday experience is often different from these advertisements.
1. Classrooms and AC Facilities
Students told us that although ACs are installed in many rooms, they rarely work properly. Some classrooms remain extremely warm during summers, and students face discomfort throughout the day.
2. Water and Drinking Facility Issues
Drinking water availability is another issue frequently mentioned by students. At several places, water coolers or refrigerators either did not function or cooled the water poorly. Basic amenities like clean drinking water should be guaranteed in any college environment, especially in hot regions.

While the college promotes having well-equipped labs, students reported that many labs lacked up-to-date equipment, proper maintenance, or trained faculty to handle practical sessions. Core engineering subjects require hands-on training, but inconsistent lab schedules and missing resources affected students’ technical development.
4. Overall Campus Maintenance
Some areas of the campus were maintained decently, while others were neglected. Students mentioned issues such as unclean washrooms, poor lighting in certain blocks, and lack of timely repairs in labs or classrooms.
Overall, the infrastructure and facilities do not fully match what is shown online. Students repeatedly told our team that the college’s promotional material is far more polished than the real environment they experience every day.
Placement Reality at IEC – What Students Actually Experience
When it comes to engineering colleges, placements are often the deciding factor for most students. IEC College promotes itself as an institute with strong industry connections, good company tie-ups, and opportunities for all students. However, the experiences shared with our team paint a very different picture.
According to final-year students, there is a huge gap between what is advertised and what actually happens on the ground. Several students reported that during their entire academic journey, only a handful of companies visited the campus — and even those were mostly non-technical or low-salary job roles.
The First Company Visit – A Major Letdown
Students recalled that the very first company that visited the campus during their final year was a firm named TechBridge. At first, there was some hope, as students expected a genuine opportunity to start their careers. However, the reality was disappointing:
- Only 2 students were selected from the entire batch.
- The offered salary was around ₹10,000 per month.
- The company required students to sign a two-year bond.
- If a student left early, they had to pay penalties.
Final-year students told our team that the opportunity felt restrictive and unfair, especially considering the low salary and the long-term bond commitment. Many decided not to proceed further with the offer.
Lack of Technical Jobs – A Harsh Reality
After the TechBridge visit, students reported that no proper technical or engineering-focused companies visited the campus for a long time. Many expected at least some IT companies, core engineering firms, or startups to arrive — but months passed without meaningful opportunities.
The few companies that did visit offered roles such as:
- Sales Executive
- Marketing Analyst
- Customer Support
- BPO-related positions
- Field Sales or Tele-sales roles
These roles were mostly unrelated to engineering or technical knowledge. Students felt discouraged, as they had joined the college with the expectation of receiving placement opportunities in relevant fields like software development, electronics, mechanical design, AI, or networking. Instead, the majority of roles offered were entry-level non-tech positions that did not require an engineering degree.
Final-Year Students – No Significant Placement Activity
Students who are currently in their final year shared that, even after reaching the last phase of their B.Tech journey, the college has still not brought any good or relevant companies to campus. They described the placement environment as completely inactive, with minimal to no drives happening.
Some students shared that when they approached the Training & Placement Cell for updates, they were told to “wait” or “prepare for upcoming drives,” but those drives often never happened. Months were spent hoping for better companies, but the situation stayed the same.
The overall sentiment from final-year students was clear — the college’s placement support did not match their expectations or the promotional promises shown during admissions.
Promised vs. Delivered – A Huge Gap in Placement Claims
On social media platforms and the official website, IEC College often highlights old placement statistics, past achievements, and photos of previous batches receiving offer letters. However, students told our team that these visuals do not represent the current placement situation at all.
Many of the companies listed online are:
- From old batches
- No longer visiting the campus
- Based on internships, not full-time jobs
- Or simply promotional mentions without actual recruitment
Students were disappointed because the placement picture shown publicly looks strong and promising, but the real situation on campus is almost the opposite. This mismatch between claims and reality was one of the biggest concerns students wanted to highlight.
Attendance Pressure and Fine System – A Major Burden on Students
Another major issue that many students at IEC College raised was the strict and often excessive attendance enforcement. While maintaining attendance is important in any institution, students explained that the college’s approach felt more like pressure than discipline.
According to multiple accounts, the college imposes fines on students who fall below the required 75% attendance. Instead of offering academic support, extra classes, or counseling, the situation is often treated as a financial penalty. Many students said they were surprised at how aggressively attendance was monitored, even when classes were not being conducted regularly or when teachers themselves were absent.

The environment should inspire students to grow, but instead, many described it as a place where they constantly struggled to stay motivated.
Honest Advice for Students Planning to Take Admission
Based on the detailed experiences shared with our team by multiple IEC College students, we believe it is important to present honest advice for those who are considering admission. Engineering is a crucial decision that shapes your future, so knowing the reality is essential.
1. Do Not Trust Promotional Material Blindly
Many students said that the college uses old placement photos, outdated statistics, and misleading claims on platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and the official website. Always cross-check with current students before making a decision.
2. Understand How FW (Fee Waiver) Actually Works
If you are taking admission under the Fee Waiver (FW) category, remember that only tuition fees are supposed to be waived. Students told us that IEC still charged large amounts from them even under FW seats, which is not how the system is intended to work. FW seats are meant for students from financially weaker backgrounds, but the fee demands did not align with that goal.
3. If You Want Strong Placements, Think Carefully
If your top priority is getting placed in a good company — especially in core engineering or IT — then students strongly advised reconsidering IEC. The current placement situation, as described by final-year students, is not at all promising.
